It was a close call and a cheeky one. A worker in Perth, Western Australia, narrowly escaped serious injury when an e-scooter battery exploded into a fireball right in front of him β€” and the whole thing was caught on CCTV.

The man was at a tyre shop, working on the scooter, when smoke suddenly started pouring out of it. In the video, he kneels down, hears the first pop, and lets out a scream. He quickly stands and moves away.

Just seconds later, the battery goes off like a mini bomb. A massive fireball engulfs part of the workshop. The blaze burns hot for about a minute before dying down. The man comes back with a fire extinguisher to finish the job.

Social media praised his quick escape β€” but also joked about how his pants slipped down, giving an accidental peek at his backside.

β€œHe escaped just in the crack of time,” one person wrote.

β€œI’m glad he’s safe, but mooning the internet would be my last straw,” another said.

A third asked: β€œWhy do bad things always happen on a full moon?”

And one more added: β€œY’all be blurring the wackiest stuff, but not homie’s dignity.”

Fire experts say the blast was caused by a lithium-ion battery failure. These batteries, especially cheap or low-quality ones, can go into something called β€œthermal runaway” β€” when heat builds up faster than it can escape. This chain reaction can make them burst into flames and release dangerous gases.

Lithium battery fires are on the rise. In NSW, 2024 data shows one happens every four days, making them the fastest-growing fire type in the state.

Authorities are cracking down. Under new laws, products sold in NSW must meet strict international safety standards. They’ll need to be tested, certified, and properly labelled before hitting shelves.

Sellers who break the rules face penalties of up to $825,000. That’s a lot more than the cost of a pair of work pants.
