Marjorie Taylor Greene, a congresswoman from Georgia, once seen as one of Donald Trumpβs closest allies, announced she will resign from Congress at the start of 2026. She made the surprise announcement in a 10 minute video and a long statement posted on social media.
Greene said she felt pushed out of Washington and blamed the tone of modern politics. βIβve always been despised in Washington, DC, and just never fit in,β she said in the statement.
She listed several reasons for leaving, from threats to frustration with lawmakers who cannot pass laws even when their party holds power.
βAlmost one year into our majority, the legislature has been mostly sidelined, we endured an eight week shutdown wrongly resulting in the House not working for the entire time, and we are entering campaign season which means all courage leaves and only safe campaign re election mode is turned on,β she wrote.
The resignation follows a bitter public split between Greene and Trump that blew up on social media this month. Greene said she had accused Trump of blocking the release of Department of Justice files tied to Jeffrey Epstein and that their private messages became public.
In posts on Truth Social, Trump returned fire and used his familiar nicknames. He called her βMarjorie Taylor Brownβ and said, βGreen grass turns Brown when it begins to ROT!β He later added, βMarjorie Traitor Greene.β
Greene pushed back. She said she had βdefended President Trumpβ in public for years. βIβve said over and over the women say he did nothing wrong and their attorney says heβs the only one who helped,β she wrote as part of her defense.
She also insisted the Epstein files matter and accused others of trying to stop them from coming out. βItβs astonishing really how hard heβs fighting to stop the Epstein files from coming out that he actually goes to this level,β she said.
Many Republican leaders reacted with surprise. Some saw Greene as a draw for conservative voters and a forceful critic of the left. Others said the public feud showed how quickly alliances can fray when politics turns personal.
The resignation will take effect on January 5, 2026 according to her announcement, setting up a new scramble in her district. That date is also the usual start day for a new Congress and means voters in her area will soon face a high stakes choice.
Greene ends her tenure having been both a lightning rod and a loyal voice at times. Her departure is the sharpest sign yet that the current Republican fight over loyalty and direction is not just loud but real.
