During a live press conference at the White House, the seventy-nine-year-old president appeared to nod off while Dr Mehmet Oz spoke about lowering the price of certain weight loss drugs. And as Dr Oz mentioned people being able to “go to bed,” Trump decided to lead by example.
The cameras caught him sitting back in his chair, eyes shut tight, looking like a man enjoying his favorite pillow.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, never one to miss a chance to troll Trump, posted the image on X with the caption: “DOZY DON IS BACK!” He even added a video for extra proof. The post exploded online within minutes, sparking jokes, memes, and a fresh round of “Sleepy Don” nicknames.
MSNBC host Jen Psaki also joined the fun. On her show The Briefing with Jen Psaki, she said, “I mean, that was him in the White House today, basically appearing to nod off while his surgeon general talked about, of all things, really, dementia, obesity and sleep loss. I mean, it kind of feels a little too on the nose, doesn’t it?”
The timing could not have been worse. Trump had just announced deals with drugmakers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to lower prices on some GLP-1 weight loss medications.
Adding to the spectacle, a man standing behind Trump fainted during the event. To his credit, the president did stand up when this happened. But even that moment could not erase the image of him catching Zs only moments earlier.
White House aides quickly ushered the press out, saying the man who fainted was “OK.” Still, the damage was already done. The internet does not forget, and screenshots live forever.
Meanwhile, Trump’s team continues to insist that he barely sleeps at all. Attorney General Pam Bondi said on The Katie Miller Podcast that “none of the White House team can keep up with him.” Vice President JD Vance added, “Sometimes the president will call you at 12:30 or 2 in the morning. Then he’ll call you at 6 in the morning about a totally different topic. It’s like, ‘Mr. President, did you go to sleep last night?’”
Even Kid Rock joined the club, saying on The Will Cain Show, “Like, you know, I’ll talk to him at 2 in the morning and then… he’ll call me at like 5 a.m. and be like, ‘How do you like it?’ I’m like, ‘I’m up. I’m ready to go.’”
All these stories paint Trump as a tireless work machine. But after that video, many Americans are wondering if the machine just ran out of batteries.
Critics say the “never sleeps” myth is starting to look as shaky as one of his golf swings. Between the naps, the hand bruises, and the wobbly walks, people are asking what is really going on.
The White House said Trump’s latest physical exam included an MRI and a cognitive test. They have not explained why he needed the MRI, which only fueled more rumors. When a leader needs a brain scan but still claims to be superhuman, something does not add up.
Psychologist Dr John Gartner told The Daily Beast that Trump’s “major deterioration” in language and memory might be a sign of dementia. “He used to speak with a high level of vocabulary in very polished paragraphs. Now what we see is not only has his vocabulary gone down, but there are times when he’s really unable to complete a thought,” he said
