‘Destroy MTG’: Trump’s Hard-Line Push Against an Ex-Ally Is Set to Grow Even More Intense

For years, Donald Trump treated Marjorie Taylor  like she was political royalty. Inside Trump’s circle, he often called her his “favorite” House Republican. Advisers say he floated her name for top posts in a future administration and bragged about her energy, her loyalty, even her toughness.

One former aide recalls Trump joking that Greene looked strong enough to “take” several prominent male Republicans in a fight, and that he said it with complete admiration.

That era is gone.

In the span of a few days, Greene went from MAGA favorite to MAGA traitor in Trump’s eyes. The crack in their relationship has one cause: Jeffrey Epstein.

Greene is one of four House Republicans who broke with Trump by signing a discharge petition to force a vote on releasing all Justice Department files related to Epstein, the wealthy sex offender whose name has long hovered over powerful political and business circles — including Trump’s. The move blindsided Trump and his senior team, who believed Greene would never go against him on an issue this explosive.

A senior Trump administration official described the president’s mood with a single phrase: “He feels very betrayed.” The official said Trump saw his endorsement as a priceless gift — something he believed Greene should repay with absolute loyalty. To him, her decision to support the full release of the Epstein files is not just a disagreement. It is a personal insult.

“He thinks she’s spitting in his face,” the official added.

Trump has tried, at least publicly, to act like the looming vote does not bother him. Privately, advisers say he is furious that the vote is even happening, and that Republicans he once trusted helped make it possible. But Greene is getting the full force of his anger. One Republican who recently spoke with Trump summed up the president’s attitude toward her in two words: “Destroy MTG.”

People close to the president say this is not simply about Epstein or old associations. It is about power. Trump expects Republicans, especially those he views as beneficiaries of his support, to follow his lead. Greene’s break from him sends a message to the rest of the party that even his most devoted allies can go their own way — and that is the part Trump cannot stand.

Greene, meanwhile, is presenting her decision as a matter of transparency, not rebellion. At a press event earlier this year, she stood with women who say they were trafficked or abused by Epstein and demanded answers from the government. Her allies say she sees the release of the files as long overdue and believes voters want it. To them, this is about justice, not Trump’s personal comfort.

But people inside Trump’s orbit say the president does not accept that explanation. They say he sees the push to release the documents as a trap set by Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans — a trap Greene walked right into. One adviser said Trump believes the vote will spark a media circus aimed at embarrassing him and forcing him to answer uncomfortable questions.

“He thinks she handed the Democrats a loaded weapon,” the adviser said.

The split has stunned some in Trump world. Greene has spent years fiercely defending Trump on cable news, social media, and the House floor. Her loyalty became part of her brand. That makes her decision to break with him now even more dramatic.

Still, several Republicans say the rift may grow. Greene has been moving toward a more independent posture over the last year, focusing on issues that build her own profile rather than simply echoing Trump’s fights. Her move on the Epstein files could mark a turning point — not only for her, but for Trump’s hold on the House.
