A new investigation shows President Donald Trump is doing far less work in his second term. The New York Times reviewed his public schedule and found a sharp drop in activity.
Trump had 1688 official appearances during the first 10 months of his first term. This year he has only 1029, a 39% decrease. For someone who loves saying he works harder than everyone, the numbers tell a different story.
The Times report also says Trump now begins his public duties later in the day. During his first term, his events usually started around 10.30 a.m. Now many start after noon. Most people cannot show up at work after lunch and still keep the job, but Trump is in a position where no supervisor can check his clock except the voters.
This lighter schedule arrives during a time when many Americans say Trump seems more tired than he used to be. He is 79, the oldest president ever elected, so people naturally watch closely.
Several moments have made the conversation even louder. One came in the Oval Office during a press event on the cost of weight loss drugs. Cameras caught him closing his eyes again and again. He only stood up after a man collapsed behind him. Reporters were quickly rushed out, which made the moment even more noticeable.
The irony is impossible to ignore. Trump spent years calling Joe Biden βSleepy Joe.β Now many Americans joke that the title might need a new owner.
Trumpβs team strongly denies any issue. Vice President JD Vance told Sean Hannity that Trump does not sleep on long flights. He said that during 20 hour trips, Trump stays awake the entire time. It is a dramatic claim, but it does not match the slow mornings and short workdays shown on his public schedule.
The president has also taken more foreign trips this year. He has already made 8, compared to 4 during his first year in office. His supporters say that proves he is active. Critics say it is an easy way to avoid long workdays in Washington. Whatever the truth, most Americans care far more about what he does in the Oval Office than how often he gets on Air Force One.
Inside the White House, staff say the public schedule does not show Trumpβs βreal hours.β They point to his late night Truth Social posts as evidence that he works longer than listed. It is true he posts at midnight, but sending out late night rants is not the same thing as handling policy or governing the country.
Questions about Trumpβs health have also increased because of his medical history. He has chronic venous insufficiency, and he often has large bruises on his hands. Many photos show makeup on the back of his hand where he tries to cover them. It is hard to hide something that obvious when cameras are everywhere.
Reporters recently asked why Trump needed an MRI during his last physical. His doctors refused questions, and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt did not explain the test. Trump himself told reporters the MRI was βvery standardβ and that the doctor said it was βthe best result he has ever seen.β
Doctors who reviewed the situation told CNN that MRIs usually happen for a reason, not as a basic checkup. They say the public deserves clarity, especially when the patient is the president.
Another issue people notice is Trumpβs speaking style. He jumps between topics without finishing thoughts. He often starts a sentence in one direction and ends it somewhere completely unrelated. A psychologist told The Daily Beast Podcast that Trump shows a βmassive increaseβ in signs of dementia. He described Trumpβs speech as βa stone skipping along the water,β which many viewers immediately recognized.
