The people of Malava were left in shock and deep sadness after United Democratic Alliance parliamentary aspirant Dr Enock Andanje Musambai collapsed and died during a campaign rally.
The incident happened at Bulupi Primary School in West Kabras Ward, where UDA leaders had gathered for a women empowerment event. The rally was led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, joined by President William Rutoβs aide Farouk Kibet, Members of Parliament, and several local leaders.
According to witnesses, Dr Andanje arrived at the venue in his vehicle. As he tried to greet supporters through the sunroof, he appeared overwhelmed. He collapsed inside his car before he could reach the podium where other leaders were seated.
The 58-year-old politician was rushed to Oasis Hospital in Kakamega. Sadly, doctors confirmed that he was dead on arrival. His sudden death cast a dark cloud over the event, cutting short what was meant to be a day of political engagement and celebration.
Mudavadi confirmed the news during the rally, describing Dr Andanje as a committed leader and an education champion.
βIt is with deep sadness that I confirm the passing of our aspirant, Mwalimu Dr Enock Andanje Musambai. He was a committed leader who believed in unity and service. We stand with his family during this difficult moment,β Mudavadi said.
Until his passing, Dr Andanje was a respected figure in the education sector. He was a former Chief Principal at Bungoma High School, where he worked tirelessly to improve academic performance and facilities. Many in Malava credited him for raising the bar in local education and inspiring young people to pursue their dreams.
Colleagues and friends described him as progressive, vocal, and hardworking. They said his entry into politics was driven by a desire to transform the lives of his constituents, especially in the education sector.
Farouk Kibet, who had campaigned alongside Dr Andanje earlier in the week, sent his condolences and urged supporters to stay united.
Mudavadi also used the moment to call for discipline and unity within the UDA camp. He reminded aspirants to focus on ideas rather than personal gain, and to assure residents that they would remain in the party even after the primaries.
βOur politics should be about ideas, not personal ambition,β Mudavadi told the gathering.
Dr Andanje had been seeking the UDA ticket for the Malava by-election set for November 27, 2025. The seat became vacant earlier this year, and competition for the partyβs nomination was already intense. His death now leaves a gap in the race and in the partyβs campaign plans.
The mood at the rally shifted immediately after news of his death was confirmed. The planned speeches and entertainment were cut short. Leaders and supporters stood together in small groups, trying to come to terms with the shocking loss.
His body was later moved to Kakamega County General Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
